Proficiency Testing (PT) uses interlaboratory comparisons to evaluate the performance of participants for tests or measurements. The statistical design and analytical techniques applied must be appropriate for the stated purpose of each PT. Most PT schemes compare the participant’s deviation from an assigned value with a numerical criterion. Different scoring strategies are available and commonly used, as described in the International Standard ISO 13528, with a new version scheduled for publication at the end of 2015. The different strategies used to determine the assigned value and the criterion to calculate performance statistics are critical because they will lead to different interpretations. It is very important to consider whether the assigned value...

Passive samplers for monitoring priority micropollutants in surface waters: a national scale study ArchiMer

The implementation of the Water Framework Directive (WFD) requires the monitoring of micropollutants in the aquatic environments to prevent any damages to both human health and ecosystems. In this context, a number of organic and inorganic compounds have been selected as priority pollutants and their measurement is necessary to ensure that water-quality standards are maintained (EC, 2008; EC, 2013; EC, 2015). For two decades, passive sampling methods have been developed for the monitoring of organic and inorganic compounds. Passive samplers allow measuring these compounds at trace levels by accumulation and concentration over long-term exposure. Moreover, the use of integrative passive samplers (IPS) allows a better representativeness of measurements...

Position paper on passive sampling techniques for the monitoring of contaminants in the aquatic environment - Achievements to date and perspectives ArchiMer
Miege, Cecile; Mazzella, Nicolas; Allan, Ian; Dulio, Valeria; Smedes, Foppe; Tixier, Celine; Vermeirssen, Etienne; Brant, Jan; O'Toole, Simon; Budzinski, Helene; Ghestem, Jean-philippe; Staub, Pierre-francois; Lardy-fontan, Sophie; Gonzalez, Jean-louis; Coquery, Marina; Vrana, Branislav.
This paper, based on the outcome of discussions at a NORMAN Network-supported workshop in Lyon (France) in November 2014 aims to provide a common position of passive sampling community experts regarding concrete actions required to foster the use of passive sampling techniques in support of contaminant risk assessment and management and for routine monitoring of contaminants in aquatic systems. The brief roadmap presented here focusses on the identification of robust passive sampling methodology, technology that requires further development or that has yet to be developed, our current knowledge of the evaluation of uncertainties when calculating a freely dissolved concentration, the relationship between data from PS and that obtained through biomonitoring....
